stds-2012-132012 STANDARDS FOREWORD

THE WAY THAT WE CARRY OUT OUR DAILY WORKING ACTIVITIES AND THE REASONS WE FOLLOW DOCUMENTED GUIDELINES IS TO ENSURE WE HAVE SAFE OPTIMAL OUTCOMES FOR OUR PATIENTS. THE AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF OPERATING ROOM NURSE’S (ACORN) STANDARDS ARE ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE WE MEET PERIOPERATIVE STANDARDS OF PRACTICE ON A DAY TO DAY BASIS WITHIN OUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT.

THE ACORN STANDARDS ENTER A RIGOROUS PROCESS OF REVIEW PRIOR TO BEING RELEASED FOR GENERAL USE.

THE ACORN BOARD ELECT A CHAIRPERSON TO OVERSEE THE COMPLETION OF THE STANDARDS REVIEW, THIS POSITION IS INTEGRAL IN ENSURING THE ACORN STANDARDS ARE PREPARED AND RELEASED ON TIME. A TEAM LEADER IS THEN CHOSEN AND ALLOCATED A STANDARD THAT IS FOR REVIEW.

THE TEAM LEADER WORKS TOGETHER WITH A GROUP OF SPECIALTY PERIOPERATIVE NURSES FROM DIFFERENT CLINICAL BACKGROUNDS ON THEIR PARTICULAR ALLOCATED STANDARD.

Using the evidence material gathered by the Johanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and other reliable resources the standard is adapted to keep up with current research and findings. A draft version is then sent to the ACORN Board for review, changes made if required and then the final draft is sent to ACORN’s legal representation for final review.
This method of review is lengthy and arduous but the end product is a complete evidence based document that results in standards that perioperative nurses can utilise to guide their day to day practice knowing that they are following up to date research and practice.
The ACORN Standards may be utilised in courts of law if there are discrepancies around perioperative practice. It is imperative that all perioperative nurses utilise these standards in their day to day working environment to ensure a safe perioperative outcome.
The standards are not produced to make the life of a perioperative nurse difficult but to ensure we maintain a uniformed delivery of care at all levels of practice and across Australia as a nation.
I urge you and your colleagues to ensure your health care facility follow ACORN standards to ensure good safe perioperative practice and the goal we all strive for which is optimal patient outcomes.
