ACORN Standards for Perioperative Nursing Competency Resource Package

THE ACORN STANDARDS FOR PERIOPERATIVE NURSING COMPETENCY RESOURCE PACKAGE' HAS BEEN DEVELOPED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS BY A TEAM OF AUSTRALIAN PERIOPERATIVE NURSES LED BY CAROLYN WILLIAMS. CAROLYN WAS COMMISSONED BY ACORN TO FEVEW THE ACORN COMPETENCY STANDARD (1999) AND ENSURE THEIR RELEVANCY 10 CURRENT PERIOPERATIVE NURSING PRACTICE. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ACORN CHAIR OF THE COMPETENCY STANDARDS REVIEW COMRNITTEE 2002 - 2006 VERONICA HILL, A RESEARCH PROJECT WAS DEVELOPED USING DELPHI METHODOLOGY. FOLOWING THE RESEARCH RESULTS, THE COMPETENCY STANDARDS FOR 2008 HAVE BEEN AUTHORISED BY THE CUFFENT ACORN BOARD.

This resource package contains the 2008 competency standards, the research report describing the research process which includes appendices outlining the data collection and analysis and a tool kit compiled by Carollyn using a team of expert perioperative academics and clinical educators. This tool kit is designed for perioperative nurses to assist them in the utiisaton oi the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) Competency Standards for perioperative Nursing in their clinical practice setting.

ACORN adopted the concept of professional campetence as a requirement of perioperative nursing practice. They believed that the development of such standards would also complement the ACORN Standards, Guidelines and Position Statements (Davies & Hamlin, 2003) as cited in Wiliams (2407).
This resource package, based on evidence, will provide a valuable contribution to perioperative nurses to enhance further research and to promote high standards of clinical competence in their work ethic.
