Medical Company Representatives to the Perioperative Environment
Medical Company Representatives  to the Perioperative Environment

The ACORN standards not only provide a minimum standard of practice for perioperative nurses and healthcare facilities, but also requirements for all visitors including medical company representatives (MCRs). Relevant standards for MCRs include:

• Standard 2 - Aseptic technique
• Standard 3 - Counting of accountable items used during surgery
• Standard 7 - Infection prevention
• Standard 11 - Perioperative attire
• Standard 24 - Visitors to the perioperative environment

Standard 24, Statement 8 states that:

MCRs shall provide evidence of education and instruction that ensures safe conduct and practice within the perioperative environment.

The potential for visitors to participate in or contribute to direct patient care while in the operating theatre represents a risk to both the patient and to healthcare facilities. Demonstration of participation in ACORN approved training for medical company representatives represents an important step in ensuring the safety of patients and visitors alike.

Training providers are welcome to submit educational programs to ACORN for accreditation by the ACORN Education and Research Committee and approval by the Board.
