Kate
Smith, RN,
Perioperative Nursing
Grad.Dip.
In 2001 I completed my
University training and was a very
excited graduate entering the workforce as a Division One registered
nurse. For my graduate year I was looking for a range of experience and
variety, and had a particular interest in working in the clinical area
of neonates. The Royal Women's Hospital was my preferred
place to complete my graduate year and I felt extremely privileged to
obtain a position for the 2002 Graduate Program.

I started nursing in South Australia, at age 17 in 1974. I completed the Enrolled Nurses program in 1975.
I stayed on at my training hospital for six years, working on the
wards, and scouting in Theatre three days per week. I then got married,
and left South Australia. At that stage I always intended to become a
Registered Nurse, but my family grew, and I put it off.

I commenced my Registered General Training at the Royal Adelaide
Hospital in 1990 group 902. On completion of my training in Jan 1993, I
worked for 6 months doing agency work while waiting for my GNP to
commence at the Women's and Children's Hospital Adelaide. April 1994 I
got a job at the Royal Adelaide Hospital working in Cardiac theatres. I
took the job knowing that if I didn't like it I could always change
areas. Well that was 10 years ago, up to when I took maternity leave. I
worked in the RAH Cardiothoracic theatres till 1998 when I took up the
position of Clinical Nurse Cardiac and Thoracic theatres at Flinders
Medical Centre. I have since resigned my position at FMC after
maternity leave to pursue the joys of motherhood and will now do the
odd agency shift.
I became a member of SAPNA in 1994 on commencement in the
Cardiothoracic Unit at the RAH. Attending numerous education sessions
and conferences I joined the SAPNA committee in 2001. Being on the
committee and working with such dedicated Perioperative nurses is such
a privilege. I have had the opportunity to attend interstate
conferences as the committee representative as well as the opportunity
to be apart of the ACORN review panel for the count standard.
Opportunities like this give me the ability to see the amount of hard
work that goes into the success of both SAPNA and ACORN. |

I've recently been appointed as Nurse Educator, Operating
Suite at The Sutherland Hospital, Sydney.
Since seeing my first operation whilst studying I knew theatres was
what I wanted to do. From there I pushed to be allowed to do two
perioperative rotations during my new graduate year and I stayed on in
theatres since. |

I'm a scrub nurse in the Operating Suite at St Vincent's
Hospital, Sydney. I first came to theatres because I wanted a change
from Intensive Care nursing. I thought perioperative nursing would be a
good stepping stone in my career, but in fact I liked it so much, I
stayed. First of all, I did a short introductory course, then I did a
20-week course called Foundations in Perioperative Nursing run by the
periop education team in Sydney's South East Health. |
