The ACORN Journal is published quarterly. Original articles pertaining to perioperative nursing are invited. The editor welcomes manuscripts on innovative practices and technology, clinical practice, education, management and pilot studies, summaries and articles from research studies.

Requirements for publishing

  • News Roundup and Product news: special interest news and product news are included free of charge.

  • Feature news and conference reports: main feature articles should be between 1500-2500 words. All other articles to be 1000 words or less. May include photographs or tables.

  • Book reviews: books and monographs will be reviewed depending on their interest to subscribers. Books should be sent directly to the editor. No books will be returned.

  • Coming events: conference and seminares dates will be included in the events diary.

Preparation of Manuscripts

In the first instance, the original copy with a separate, covering letter identifying the author's name, address, business and home phone numbers, and email details should be sent electronically to the editor. If this is not possible, then the original copy plus two quality photocopies of the manuscript must be submitted with a covering letter (as above) via ordinary mail. A photograph of the author should be included. All copy should be written on a word processor using double spacing, with wide margins on both sides of the page, leaving a space between paragraphs. The inclusion on an IBM compatible 3.5 floppy disc saved in word or text format is necessary, if submitting hard copy only.

Manuscripts are to conform to acceptable English usage. Standard abbreviations should be used consistently throughout the article. Unusual or coined abbreviations should be spelled out the first time they appear, with the abbreviation in parenthesis. Generic names of drugs should be used with the propriety names in parenthesis, if desired. Weights and measures should be expressed in metric units and temperatures in degrees centigrade.

Illustrations

All artwork should include an unlabelled original with a labelled copy. Photographs or slides should be labeled clearly on post it notes and placed on back. A key should be provided for group photographs. Line drawings should be in black ink on white paper.

Computer generated charts, tables and graphs are suitable, but must be accompanied by a hard copy. All electronic photographs must be scanned at 300dpi, CMYK and submitted as .jpeg, tiff or .eps.

Permission to reproduce illustrations must be obtained by the author from the owner of the copyright, usually the publisher.

If used, hard copy photographs and slides should be protected by stiff card before posting.

Administration

Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged but not reports, letters, news, or coming events. The editor's decision to publish or reject is final. The editor has the right to edit the article or emend the style. The copyright of manuscripts remains with the author.

Peer Review

Submitted manuscripts are subject to independent review by at least two peers. When the manuscript has been reviewed, the author will be advised by the editor as to whether it has been accepted or rejected for publication, or if revision is recommended. The manuscript will then be taken to an editorial meeting to decide when it will be published.

Referencing

References within the text should take the form of a superscript number at the point of reference and then in a numbered list at the conclusion of the text. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are noted in the text. All references must be cited in the text and communications and unpublished data should be cited in the text in parenthesis. They should not appear in the reference list.
