My name is Beverley Dyer.
I began nursing in 1986 when I undertook the compulsory
practical, hospital based, component of my Mothercraft Nurse
training. I had a ball and I was hooked. I then moved
interstate where I became an Enrolled Nurse.
Moving again we arrived in Darwin and between 1994 and 1999 I worked at
Royal Darwin Hospital and a small medical centre, where I decided it
was time to do my Nursing Degree at the Northern Territory University
(now the Charles Darwin University). During my undergraduate study I chose the
Peri-Operative elective, and once again was hooked. I spent 5
months of my Post-Graduate year in the Operative Theatre Unit at Royal
Darwin Hospital, consolidating the skills taught in the undergraduate
unit. During this time the bombing of Bali occured, I was
privileged to be a member of the ‘team' and witness the unit and
hospital response.
While I enjoyed my other post-graduate placements, I felt most at home
and challenged by my time in the Peri-Operative setting and requested
to return. I have now worked in the unit for nearly two years and
continue to consolidate and learn many new skills. The busy unit
in Darwin exposes you to such a variety of experiences from abscesses(these can be really amazing!) and basic
general surgery plus specialities such as Neuro, Orthopaedic, Gynae,
Urology, ENT, OMF and Vascular. There can be days when you don't
know what is coming through the door, but you are ready for just about
anything. |
