I'm a scrub nurse in the Operating Suite at St Vincent's
Hospital, Sydney. I first came to theatres because I wanted a change
from Intensive Care nursing. I thought perioperative nursing would be a
good stepping stone in my career, but in fact I liked it so much, I
stayed. First of all, I did a short introductory course, then I did a
20-week course called Foundations in Perioperative Nursing run by the
periop education team in Sydney's South East Health.
Now I'm enrolled
in a Masters, which includes a one-year Clinical Program here at St
Vincent's Hospital. This study has given me the knowledge and
experience I really wanted to get in my perioperative career - I really
feel it's fast-tracked it. Mind you, I've come out realising just how
little I know! It will take me years to gain the knowledge I expect
from a perioperative nurse. The best part about being a perioperative
nurse is that every day is different and the rapid advances in
perioperative care mean that I am always leaning something new. If I
could change anything about perioperative nursing, it would be to have
more staffing to allow me to do my extra roles in work time. For
example, I look after the Lasers, endoscopes and Steris processors and
equipment in the operating suite and finding time to write up
instructions and policies when I'm at work can be a big challenge. My
aim is to have the confidence in my knowledge and abilities to be a
well rounded perioperative nurse in all the specialties. |
