Cheryl Carr Clinical Nurse Manager Calvary Health Care Tasmania St Johns Campus Theatre and Day Surgery Unit.
Hi,
I am Cheryl Carr, I am currently the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) of St
Johns Campus Theatre and Day Surgery Unit of Calvary Health Care
Tasmania (CHCT), a position I have held for the past 2 ½ years. I
commenced my professional life as an Enrolled Nurse, and over a period
of 15 years I worked in aged care, in CSSD, as a surgical nurse and as
a perioperative nurse, across both public and private sectors. I was an
inaugural member of the Enrolled Nurse Special Interest Group that
lobbied the University of Tasmania for a Bachelor of Nursing course to
be offered in Hobart that recognised prior learning for enrolled
nurses.
I subsequently undertook that course, graduating with honours
in 1997. During and subsequent to my honours year, I took a very
different path and worked for the Department of Health and Human
Services in the Women's Health Unit. For 18 months I was the Breast and
Cervical Screening Project Officer for southern Tasmania. While I
enjoyed this project, and experienced and learned so much, there was
something missing and I realised that I belonged in the operating
theatre. Consequently I went to work at the Hobart Day Surgery until I
was fortunate enough to gain a position at the Royal Hobart Hospital in
perioperative services. I worked across many specialties, mainly
orthopaedics, anaesthetics and then neurosurgery. After leaving the RHH
I took up a position at CHCT Lenah Valley Campus as a clinical nurse in
neurosurgery. After 2 years I applied for and was successful in gaining
the CNM position at St Johns Campus. I believe that I am in a very
fortunate position as CNM as it allows me to put into action many
valuable lessons I have learned from the terrific role models I have
had throughout my career. I also receive great enjoyment from seeing my
team members grow in confidence while improving their skills and
competencies and achieving their career goals. |
