I've recently been appointed as Nurse Educator, Operating
Suite at The Sutherland Hospital, Sydney.
Since seeing my first operation whilst studying I knew theatres was
what I wanted to do. From there I pushed to be allowed to do two
perioperative rotations during my new graduate year and I stayed on in
theatres since.
After completing my new grad year I enrolled in the Foundations
introductory course to theatres run through SESAHS. I then became
involved in preceptorship and enjoyed passing on my knowledge to other
nurses and being a role model for new theatre nurses. From there I
completed a graduate certificate and an opportunity arose to act as an
educator in theatres and I took it. This reinforced the role and gave
me an idea of what avenue I wanted to pursue. This opportunity was a
huge step forward for me and allowed me to find a position doing
education full time. Since this I have started my masters and now face
the challenges of education.
The best part of being a perioperative nurse educator is being able to
pass on my knowledge and the enjoyment I get from seeing new theatre
nurses develop and grow in their practice. Getting your hands dirty is
not to bad either.
If I could change anything it would be to increase staff numbers in the
perioperative environment and more development into the whole
perioperative nurse role.
What I hope for in the short term is to finish my Masters and still be
educating enthusiastic nurses. |
