I started nursing in South Australia, at age 17 in 1974. I completed the Enrolled Nurses program in 1975.
I stayed on at my training hospital for six years, working on the
wards, and scouting in Theatre three days per week. I then got married,
and left South Australia. At that stage I always intended to become a
Registered Nurse, but my family grew, and I put it off.
I came to Darwin, and started work at Darwin Private Hospital (DPH)
thirteen years ago, on the wards. In 2001, I finally realised my dream,
and I went to Charles Darwin University (NT) and completed my Nursing
degree, externally, as I still worked on the wards at DPH as an
Enrolled nurse.
In my final placement, I went to Royal Darwin Hospital, in the
perioperative area. I found this very daunting at first, as I hadn't
been in this area for many years. Luckily, everyone was very good to
me, and I stimulated an old desire.
On completion of my Degree, I accepted a post graduate position at DPH,
which included six months in the perioperative area. Once again the
perioperative nurses were very good to me, and patient with me, further
renewing my enthusiasm. At the completion of my post graduate year, I
decided that I would like to remain in the perioperative area, building
on my newfound skills.
I realise this is a great challenge for me, learning something new and
exciting every day, but I feel I have the support from the staff.
I enjoy the challenge, and realize that I have a long way to go, but I am happy to do this. |
