I am very interested in studying to become a PNSA. Any information or advice would be much appreciated.
I am a hospital trained nurse and have 20 years theatre experience. This feels like the next logical step for me but I know little about it. I look forward to hearing from you, Amanda
Hi Amanda, Thankyou for contacting me in regards to the role of the PNSA, it has been a while now since I undertook my studies but Southern Cross University NSW are the only university I am aware of that offers this program. It is quite intense and as there is no Medicare levy for First assistants in Australia at this time means that unless you are employed privately by a surgeon and paid by them then you cannot go anywhere with your study. Personally I did it, as it gave me something new to learn and I learnt skills I never though possible and it was great seeing patients pre and post operatively as well. I hope that's the kind of information you are looking for. ACORN will be setting up a special interest group for PNSA on the Website in the future so you will be able to go there and hopefully get lots of information from other PNSA's across Australia. |
