Discussion and networking forum - 5W&H

Building platforms for members' voices and responding to their feedback is an important part of ACORN achieving its mission, to advance safe, quality perioperative nursing care for Australians. In its 2019-2022 Strategic Plan ACORN committed to four values; collaboration, excellence, communication and innovation. Who, What, When, Where, Why and How - (5W&H), ACORN's new discussion and networking forum reflects and operationalises ACORN's mission and values. ACORN has designed and launched 5W&H specifically to assist ACORN members better understand and implement the ACORN Standards for Perioperative Nursing in Australia (the ACORN Standards) It includes eleven separate categorised Discussion Groups as detailed below. 5W&H users can post, read and respond to others' posts by clicking on the respective category. We think 5W&H is an important tool and useful resource that will potentially lead to improvements in Australian perioperative care. ACORN members, corporate partners and other stakeholders are warmly invited to use and interrogate 5W&H. ACORN guarantees that better understanding of the who, what, when, where, why and how (5W&H) of the ACORN Standards will substantially advance uptake of and compliance with the ACORN Standards. Please use it to facilitate communication, share ideas, seek advice from peers and benefit from others’ knowledge and experience in relation to the ACORN Standards for Perioperative Nursing in Australia. 5W&H is fully moderated and guidelines for posting are outlined below. Access 5W&H by clicking the green button "TO POST OR READ A PREVIOUS POST PLEASE CLICK HERE" at the top of this page.

From the list of 11 individual subjects select the subject that best fits your interest. You will be taken to a new page

On the new page you can:

- start a new thread (conversation) by clicking the +Add thread option

- subscribe to the subject conversations by clicking the heart Subscribe option

- view previous threads (conversations) listed by thread name, replies, originators and the most recent post by clicking the green GO button

To respond to an existing thread click on the blue Thread Name and select either the "Reply to Post" arrow option or the "Quote Post" think bubble option and add your text to post clicking the ADD POST option when you have completed your post.

You can also upload attachments related to any post to which you reply. Click Browse and select the file you wish to upload.

ACORN's Professional Standards Officer moderates the forum on ACORN's behalf as time and priority permits.  If the Moderator considers any material to be derisive, defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, potentially brings ACORN into disrepute or contains illegal materials, it will not be posted. In such cases, members will be advised by the moderator.

Other Australian nursing colleges hosting member forums similar to ACORN have over time received a range of formal complaints and expressions of concern  from colleagues, members, peers and others within the wider nursing community about commentary posted or rejected on their specific discussion forums.


5W&H  is owned, paid for, and operated by ACORN. Additionally, members of other similar forums have expressed concern that information posted is not always accurate and can be confusing to novice practitioners where advice is conflicting or lacking in evidence.

There have also been reports that members have used language that could be perceived as intimidating to the Moderator.


ACORN's leadership will regularly review 5W&H including the number of users, number and quality of posts and responses and general commentary. This review will be ongoing in 5W&H's first weeks and months. After that ACORN will assess how valuable the discussion forum is to ACORN members and what ACORN return on investment is as measured by the volume, quality and usefulness of posts as well as member engagement.

Currently, 5W&H is open to all who express an interest in the ACORN Standards at no cost to the individual. At some future time 5W&H participation may transition to a members-only community. To ensure the best possible experience for all 5W&H users, ACORN has established some basic guidelines for participation.  By joining and using this community, members agree to follow these guidelines and to reserve discussions and shared files and content to those that are best suited to the medium of a list serve. Please take a moment to acquaint yourself with these important guidelines. In order to preserve an environment that that promotes and supports polite and engaging dialogue, ACORN reserves its right to suspend or terminate participation in 5W&H the guidelines for participation are breached.

ACORN will not post commercial messages or research requests on the discussion list. If, in response to a specific query, members wish to nominate particular products or commercial resources, reply directly to the individual enquirer only if you believe it would be of assistance. Researchers seeking contact with ACORN members are requested to contact ACORN's administrators administrator@acorn.org.au who can redirect your request.

Community member contact information for the purpose of sharing with any third party is a breach of privacy legislation and is not permitted under these guidelines. An example would be the collection and provision of member data to a third party for the purposes of targeting invitations to a conference, educational or promotional event.

Research requests, employment opportunities, upcoming education events and notices such as product recall should be directed for distribution to members via ACORN's administration team. Any posts on these topics should firstly be forwarded to ACORN and any sent to the Moderator will be redirected to ACORN for distribution to the membership when information has been verified.

Primarily, ACORN supports this forum to enable the body of perioperative nursing to flourish.

If members have any conflict of interest that relates to a posting, a statement to this effect should be included. In instances where a conflict has not been declared, the poster will be requested by ACORN for this to be included. If the poster does not agree to include such a statement, the information will not be posted on 5W&H.

Please include a signature tag on all messages. Include your name, affiliation, location. ACORN will not post a pending post without your name, affiliation, location included. Please include any real or perceived conflict of interest or possible conflict of interest which might relate to the topic or content of the posting. This might include funding provided to the member by any educational group, commercial organisation (including retainers, consulting contracts) for advice or information.

State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.  

Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your reply. Delete any header information and put your response before the original posting.  


Only send a message to the entire list when it contains information from which every subscriber can benefit.  

Messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" should be sent to individuals and not to the entire list. Do not send administrative messages, such as "remove me from the list" or "STOP". You can remove yourself from future mailings by unsubscribing.
