ACORN Three Minute Thesis Competition

Entry is now open to the ACORN Three Minute Thesis (3MT) 2021 competition.

Entries close on Friday 24 September 2021.

The ACORN Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition celebrates the exciting perioperative research conducted by Australian higher degree research students. The 3MT cultivates students’ academic, presentation and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

A major prize (yet to be announced) will be awarded on a day to be confirmed during Perioperative Nurses Week, 3–9 October 2021.

Eligibility criteria

Entrants must be:

  • a confirmed higher degree by research student (MPh, PhD or Prof Doc)
  • enrolled at the time of submission
  • researching a topic related to perioperative nursing
  • an ACORN member.

Application process

Complete the entry form and submit with a three-minute video presentation. Read the information sheet for submission rules, advice on preparing the presentation, and the judging criteria.

Thank you to all our 3MT 2020 entrants!

The videos were assessed by our judging panel and scored for how comprehensible the content was and how engaging the presentation was. All the entries were of a high callibre and the scoring was very close but Toni Hains's video scored a few points above the others. Congratulations Toni!

Toni’s research examines the role and funding of nurse practitioners (NPs) as surgical assistants in Australia. Watch Toni's video to hear her research explained using accessible language in just three minutes.
