International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.
This year the theme for International Nurses Day (IND) is Our Nurses. Our Future. It will be a global celebration and part of a yearlong campaign which sets out what we want for nursing in the future in order to address the global health challenges and improve global health for all.
With the release of the first State of the World’s Nursing report in 2020, the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing & Midwifery in 2021, the Sustain and Retain in 2022 and Beyond in 2022 and our new Recover to Rebuild: Investing in the nursing workforce for health system effectiveness, International Council of Nurses (ICN) and other organisations have shown the evidence for change and called for action.
"Nurses provide care and leadership to address global health challenges everywhere, often at great personal risk. They are the essential life force for health, yet our healthcare systems worldwide have fallen short and failed to value, protect, respect and invest in this precious resource. The world has mistakenly taken nurses for granted, treating them as an invisible and inexhaustible resource. That must now stop for the sake of nurses and global health"
ICN President Dr Pamela Cipriano
How to get involved
Congratulations ACORN's photo competition winner
Thank you for all the entries from teams across Australia celebrating being nurse proud and IND 2023.
Congratulations to the Logan Theatre Team!
"My team make me so proud, I can't be there, and they have decorated the hallway. We have lots of new staff, so I suggested that we put our photos up with our name on them to see who our Nurses are." - Angela
The Logan Theatre team created a video as Angela (their IND leader) was unable to be there for IND 2023 setup and celebrations. Check out their video on ACORN Facebook or Instagram - don't forget to follow us if you don't already too.
Thank you competition sponsor BD
BD will provide an in-house education workshop on preventing surgical complications. The workshop will focus on skin antisepsis in relation to The New ACORN Standards. This workshop will be accompanied by a catered breakfast or lunch for attendees, along with a certificate of attendance for CPD.
