The dangers of surgical plume as a workplace health and safety hazard have been known for over 30 years. Yet, despite the enormous amount of research evidence and positive progress in some hospitals, there continues to be a general lack of action from medical, nursing staff, government and professional organisations to mandate the use of plume evacuation equipment across Australia.

In any other industry, such inaction on an obvious workplace health and safety hazard, would not be tolerated.  So why do we continue to subject ourselves and our colleagues to an at risk work environment in our operating theatres?

Perioperative team members must be empowered to advocate for a workplace that is 100% smoke free. This can happen through development and implementation of a clinically relevant, sustainable, risk assessment based plan, appropriate education and training, and committed leadership.

Learning objectives

Briefly review the workplace health and safety dangers of surgical plume.

Discuss barriers and enablers to implementation of plume evacuation.

Provide implementation strategies perioperative nurses can use to make their workplace smoke free, using examples from current clinical practice.
