Webinar 1 : Surgical Humidification – Clinical Benefits & Application in laparoscopic surgery

This two-part webinar series aims to explore the clinical benefits and application of warm humidified CO2 during laparoscopic and open surgery. 

In the first webinar, about laparoscopic surgery, Ms Leanne Plush will explore the anatomy and physiology of the peritoneum, discuss current laparoscopic surgical practice in regard to gas provision for the pneumoperitoneum and discuss evaporative cooling, cellular desiccation and the potential risks for the patient, concentrating on intra-operative hypothermia. Leanne will also introduce the concepts of surgical humidification. This will be followed by our clinical expert Dr Charlotte van Kessel, sharing her experience in the application of surgical humidification, in laparoscopic surgery.

Leanne Plush

Leanne Plush has been employed full time with Fisher & Paykel Healthcare since November 2007. She has been working in the National Education Team for 12 years where she provides education and staff support within all the clinical divisions of the company. Leanne has a nursing and midwifery background and has worked in senior clinical education roles in midwifery prior to working for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare. Her qualifications include RN, RM, BN, Graduate Diploma in Industry Education and Training and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Charlotte Van Kessel
Gastrointestinal Surgeon – Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Charlotte van Kessel was born in the Netherlands where she also acquired her medical degree. In 2012 she defended her thesis ‘Optimisation in detection and treatment with focal liver lesions’. After that she trained as a gastrointestinal surgeon in the Antonius Hospital Nieuwegein with special interest in colorectal surgery. To further improve her skills, she moved to Sydney in 2019 to work as a fellow in the department of colorectal surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
