The National Health and Medical Research Council has advised ACORN that the long-awaited Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2019) are now released and in effect. As ACORN members will know, these guidelines underpin almost every aspect of clinical perioperative nursing. They are also a critical component of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care's National Safety and Quality Standards (2nd ed) 2017 and in particular Standard 3: Preventing and controlling healthcare-assocaited infection standard.

The ACORN Standards Committee and members of the ACORN Standards Advisory Teams look forward to reviewing these new guidelines and ensuring that they are included in the content and recommendations of all future ACORN standards. Relevant recommendations in the next 16th edition of the ACORN Standards due for release at the Sydney 2020 ACORN conference will reflect the new Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2019) content as it relates to perioperative nursing.
